Our latest Shea Butter export from Ghana is a good example of exactly what goes into getting a shipment from Ghana to an international market.
And, as we’ve touched on before, exporting isn’t always as straightforward as moving goods from one country to another.
From Ghana to the UAE: More Than Just a Shipment
Every container tells a story.
Our latest shipment of shea butter is finally on its way from Ghana to the UAE, but it certainly didn’t have the smoothest journey.
Unexpected challenges, route changes and schedule adjustments tested us along the way. Shipping schedules can change, vessels can be delayed, routes can be altered and documentation or logistics can sometimes require additional coordination.
For an exporter, these are realities that come with international trade.
The important part is being able to adapt, communicate with partners and keep the shipment moving.
The Journey Behind Ghanaian Shea Butter
What you see when you look at a container is the final stage of a much longer process.
Our Shea Butter export from Ghana begins much further upstream, with sourcing and production.
We work alongside women’s cooperatives involved in the shea value chain, helping connect their production with international markets. This approach is important to us because the shea industry represents far more than a commodity. It supports livelihoods and creates opportunities for women and communities across shea-producing regions.
The Global Shea Alliance has highlighted the importance of strengthening women’s cooperatives, improving processing capacity and connecting producers with markets across Ghana and other shea-producing countries.
From there, there is careful production, handling, packaging and quality control before the product is prepared for export.
What Can Go Wrong When Exporting?
International shipping can involve a surprising number of moving parts.
A shipment may encounter:
- Vessel or schedule changes
- Route adjustments
- Port delays
- Documentation requirements
- Customs and clearance processes
- Changes in freight arrangements
- Communication across different time zones
- Delays between different parties in the supply chain
None of these necessarily mean that something has gone wrong with the product itself. Sometimes, they are simply part of the complexity of moving commercial goods internationally.
For exporters, the key is preparation, communication and having the ability to respond when circumstances change.
